The surface of the fruit is taut, smooth, and slightly veined, ranging in color from red-purple, blue-purple to dark violet, almost black, and shows a small opening at the base of the fruit covered with brown scales. The fig is technically a syconium, or hollow, fleshy receptacle containing a mass of tiny flowers. Beneath the thick skin, the flowers are enveloped in a spongy, pale green flesh and are a variety of ruby \u200b\u200bred to pink, dotted with golden beige seeds.
