Red plum

Red plums are a medium to large variety, averaging 4 to 8 centimeters in diameter, and are round to oval in shape with a prominent suture line extending from the stem to the base. The skin of the plum is thin, delicate, taut, and smooth with a shiny, dark red to purple base, covered with white spots, and an opaque purple bloom. Beneath the surface, the flesh displays a yellow-orange center that surrounds the pit and darkens to a red-orange hue just below the skin. The flesh also exhibits a slightly firm but tender, succulent, and watery consistency, clinging tightly to the central pit. Red plums are delicate and break down when ripe and have low acidity mixed with moderate sugar levels. Plums are known for their fruity, sugary flesh balanced with a hint of tartness, a flavor found in the skin. In addition to fruit, Santa Rosa plum trees produce small, pinkish-white flowers in the spring and are often favored as an ornamental addition to home gardens.
